Subnautica 2 - The definition of a text book sequel

Subnautica 2, a sequel to first subnautica game that has come out into early access in may. I have played the first subnautica and what is there of the second game so far. I must say it is a very honorable sequel and very true to the style of game. If you loved the first game, you’ll love the second…but maybe wait until some more updates come out.

The Good

Subnautica 2 adds a new world, new underwater creatures, improved graphics, and different ways of navigating and gathering resources in the game, all of which are very fun. There are also new tools that have changed from the original game. The developers seem to have adapted the gameplay, and honestly, it feels a lot better than the first game.

When gathering resources, the more difficult materials to obtain seem to be located farther away from where your pod crashes, making the game feel like it has a progression system that naturally follows your pace of exploration. Everything in the game has the same feel as Subnautica, but with new and different features, and some aspects are much more fleshed out.

I love the new base-building mechanics, which make building much easier and more customizable this time around. You can extend roofs and walls as much as you want and add a variety of decorations.

Another big thing that this game does different is that it is now co-op. This was a massive request to made for the first game, and is amazing now that you can play it with your friends.

The Mixed

The only downside I would mention is that there is currently quite a lack of content. This completely makes sense for an Early Access game; however, I would still recommend playing the first game over the second one at the moment, as they are very similar and there is still a lot more to do in the original. Although I personally find the second game more enjoyable, the first one feels like a fully fleshed-out experience, whereas the sequel feels like it has the potential to become just as big and amazing.

I love Subnautica 2. It seems to have found more structure in its gameplay design while keeping the aesthetic of the first game and only making improvements and changes that make it more interesting and enjoyable. However, the lack of content and the relatively short amount of playtime currently available, even after doing almost everything, makes it difficult to recommend over the original.

Conclusion

If you have already played the first Subnautica, I would definitely recommend trying Subnautica 2. However, if you haven’t played the first game yet, I would start with that one. Subnautica 2 could end up being just as good as, if not better than, the first game, and I look forward to seeing more content added in the future.
